Children of detained Malaysian couple want to stay with a Muslim family
The children of the Malaysian couple in Sweden who were arrested for allegedly beating them for not praying, has asked to be put under the care of Malay Muslim family from Malaysia whilst in foster care.
The oldest child of Azizul Raheem Awalludin and Shalwati Norshal, Aishah, 14 expressed this when she was allowed to meet with the Malaysian embassy representative and Swedish social workers recently.
Aishah said that she and her siblings are currently under the care of a non-Muslim family but they found it hard to adjust to their new environment.
Meanwhile, the Swedish government has given approval for family representatives to meet the children of the Malaysian couple.
Azizul, a Tourism Malaysia director in Stockholm and his wife Shalwati, a secondary school teacher who is currently on unpaid leave, have also requested for their children to be put under the care of a Malay Muslim family from the staff at the Malaysian embassy in Stockholm.
Wisma Putra has reportedly identified four Muslim families who are able to care for the children.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin said the list was provided by the Malaysian welfare department through the embassy has been forwarded to the Swedish social services for vetting.
He adds that this process may take some time as each family will need to be interviewed during this process.
Swedish authority allows family reps to meet children of detained couple
KUALA LUMPUR: The Swedish government has given approval for family representatives to meet the children of a Malaysian couple detained in Sweden for allegedly beating them for not praying.Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin said the approval was obtained today, thanks to the continuous efforts taken by the Malaysian Embassy's representatives in getting the cooperation from the relevant authorities in Sweden.
"Everybody must understand that we have to adhere to the tight regulations there and that we don't want to interfere with the ongoing investigation.
"After a little persuasion, they have started giving us some leeway," he told Bernama, when contacted, here today.
The children's father, an employee of Tourism Malaysia in Stockholm, and mother, a school teacher who is on unpaid leave, were detained on Dec 18 and their remand have been extended for another two weeks.
Hamzah said the positive development was hoped to give relief to the family.
"We hope that the children are all safe, healthy, able to go to school and well-fed, and that the situation will not have psychological effect on them," he said.
Meanwhile, Hamzah said the Swedish Social Service Department had also lauded Wisma Putra's suggestion for the children to be put under the care of a Muslim family.
"We have given them the names of several Muslim families. The Social Service Department has given positive response, but this will need the approval from the public prosecutor, which will be obtained at any time now.
Hamzah also explained that the decision to leave the children under the care of a non-Muslim family was made because they were the only family who could afford and willing to take the children in when the case arose.
When asked about efforts taken by certain quarters to bring the children back to Malaysia, the deputy minister said all quarters needed to be patient and avoid politicising the issue.
"It's not easy to bring the children back. Approval and consent from the parents and family members are needed. There are too many details that the public may not understand. We are trying to solve this issue nicely as it not only involves the family, but also the two countries," he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian couple
detained in Sweden for allegedly abusing their son for not performing
his prayers are Azizul Raheem Awalludin, an employee with Tourism
Malaysia in Stockholm, and his wife Shalwati Nurshal, a secondary school
teacher.
The identity of the couple was discovered through a little bit of research and investigation from the Astro AWANI reporting team, with confirmation with an undisclosed source. The source also mentioned that Azizul and Shalwati will find out today if they will be charged or not.
Through observations on social media, it is also believed that the couple’s four children are now relatively safe under the custody of a foster family. However, it is obvious that they are pining for their parents and are praying for their well being.
According to psychologist, Dr Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid, any situation where the young children are separated from their parents will definitely be a traumatic experience, and if handled wrongly, can be considered a form of abuse as well.
Young children need to be with people they trust and feel protected with. Although they are in protective custody, they should still be allowed to meet with family members or even friends so they will feel secure.
Although details of the alleged abuse are still not clear, it could well be a very traumatic event for the child who revealed the allegation that caused the parents to be detained. This is because they still see their parents as a source of security and affection.
“Sometimes, even in genuine cases of abuse, the child will feel hesitant to report their parents,” adds Dr. Hariyati.
She also mentioned that this is probably a case of a clash of culture between east and west.
Astro AWANI has contacted all parties such as Wisma Putra, Tourism Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism, the Swedish embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Swedish Ombudsman for Children. But all declined to comment on the case.
